CHAPTER 8

“I HAVEN’T EXPERIENCED THIS kind of weather since the blizzard of ’78.” My father leaned into the icy wind as we marched uptown toward the place things had gone sideways—Central Park.

The sidewalks were unusually barren of foot traffic, and a few cars headed uptown, but nothing traveled south on the road. It was eerie. I didn’t remember New York City ever being this quiet.

“I wish we had the reindeer,” I muttered.

They knew how to fly through a storm like this.

My dad chuckled. “I hear you. But this war is no place for them.”

“War?” I gave my father a side eye while trying to protect my face from the ice pelting it.

“Yes. This is a war against evil. What we are fighting is equivalent to the devil himself. And this time, we have to do more than just banish the beast.” He traded a glance with me that sent a chill all the way to the bone. “And to do that, we will have to kill the human host it has possessed before it can skip out of the body.”

Oh, great. I was the best at hunting monsters, but hunting and killing a higher demon possessing a person sounded awfully harrowing. But I couldn’t imagine losing. Not with all that was at stake, including my father’s life.

It wasn’t Christmas, so I didn’t have access to any of the magic that had resurrected my father from nearly dying on Christmas Eve. No matter how much I wished for more, I knew my magic was limited to two days a year—Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

“What’s our plan?”

“Survive and decapitate the bastard.”

I snorted a laugh that quickly died as we turned the corner onto Broadway.

I blinked at the spectacle a few blocks ahead. Nothing moved. We had to weave through the frozen bodies on the sidewalk and occasionally step onto the slick street to make our way through.

The cars were encased in ice just like the people. Whatever froze them had stalled every engine. Nothing around us moved, and the only noise besides our feet scraping on ice and snow was the wind howling down the avenue.

I wondered how close to this creeping line of snow and ice Ben had gotten before he escaped being another casualty.

Then a thought filled my heart with dread. Ben had been at ground zero with this parasite.

“Dad, you don’t think the demon got into Ben, do you?”

My father slowed for a moment and looked over his shoulder. He swallowed hard and then shook his head. “No. He would have syphoned Tanya’s magic the moment he stepped in the apartment. I guess his knowledge of monsters may have saved him. He’s just smart enough to see this and run.” He waved at the spectacle around us.

“Good. Because I think he’s Tanya’s destined match.” I side-eyed him to see his reaction. “I saw the soul connection when they shook hands.”

I caught the appearance of dimples before my father schooled his expression.

I narrowed my gaze. “You knew her match was
